Word 2011 For Mac Not Open With Ribbon

I am in need of some help. This morning i updated office 2011 - word is working fine but excel is all out of sorts. These are the messages i am getting when i try to open a file. The names of the files are showing up so i don't feel like excel was deleted or anything.

What is the text edit app for mac. I have been operating it without problem until this morning. Admittedly, I haven't opened anything in a week or two, but now I am having the exact same problem. Excel, specifically, will not open.

I get the error message as above. Unlike the OP, I have nothing on my desktop, so that isn't the problem. Also, the problem exists whether opeing a file directly, or double-clicking in the application itself. Same whether opening from Dock or Apps Folder. Can't figure it out.
